Free VIN Decoder Canada
Decode a 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) to explore its manufacturer, model year and available specifications. Start with the free lookup below.
Decode a VIN
Enter the VIN exactly as it appears on the vehicle or registration documents. The decoder provides the information available for that identifier; the level of detail varies by vehicle.
A decoded VIN does not establish a vehicle’s condition, confirm that its identification labels are genuine or replace a review of its history.
What information can you get from a VIN?
Most modern Canadian passenger vehicles use a standardized 17-character VIN. Its characters encode details assigned by the manufacturer. The exact attributes available depend on the vehicle and manufacturer.
Manufacturer identifier
Identifies the manufacturer and assigned geographic identifier. It should not be treated as definitive proof of the vehicle’s assembly country.
Vehicle description
Encodes manufacturer-defined attributes that may include model, body configuration, vehicle class or powertrain details.
Check digit
Used to check the mathematical consistency of the VIN. Passing this check does not prove that a vehicle is genuine.
Model year
A code for the model year, which may differ from the calendar year when the vehicle was manufactured.
Manufacturing plant
Identifies the plant according to the manufacturer’s coding system.
Vehicle sequence
Typically identifies the vehicle within the manufacturer’s production system, subject to applicable VIN rules.

VIN decoder vs. vehicle history report
These tools use the same VIN but answer different questions. Decoded specifications come from the identifier; historical events come from separate records, when available.
What vehicle is this?
Identifies information encoded in the VIN, such as manufacturer, model year, manufacturing plant and available vehicle attributes.
Useful for comparing the advertised vehicle with its VIN-based description.
What records are associated with it?
May include available registration, vehicle status or branding, odometer, theft, recall and matching U.S. records, depending on source and jurisdiction coverage.
Explore report sectionsA vehicle history report cannot guarantee a complete record of every past event, and a matching decoded VIN does not exclude possible VIN cloning or altered identifiers.
How to use the VinAudit Canada VIN decoder
Locate the VIN
Find the identifier on the dashboard, driver’s door label or registration paperwork. Compare visible identifiers before entering it.
Enter all 17 characters
Type the VIN into the decoder near the top of this page and submit it. Standard VINs do not use the letters I, O or Q.
Check the results
Compare the decoded vehicle details with the car and seller’s documents. If you need historical records, review the separate VIN history-check option.
Where can I find a vehicle’s VIN?
You can usually find the VIN in one or more of these locations. Its placement may differ by make, model and vehicle type.
Driver-side dashboard
Look through the lower corner of the windshield on the driver’s side.
Driver-side door opening
Check the manufacturer label or plate on the door pillar or door jamb.
Vehicle registration or ownership documents
Check documents issued by the relevant provincial or territorial authority.
Insurance documents
Review the policy or other insurance documents identifying the insured vehicle.
Other manufacturer locations
Some vehicles have additional stamped or labelled identifiers. Consult manufacturer guidance when needed.
If the visible identifiers do not match, ask for clarification and arrange an inspection before making a purchase. Learn more in our VIN cloning guide.

What should you check after decoding a VIN?
VIN decoding is a useful first step, but it should not be the only check you make before buying a used car in Canada.
Compare the car and the decoded specifications
Check the model year, make, body style and other available details against the vehicle and documents.
Review available vehicle history
Use a VIN history check to research reported registration, status, odometer and other records associated with the VIN.
Check safety and theft information
Follow up with the appropriate recall and theft-check resources, including official lookups where relevant.
Inspect the vehicle independently
Confirm the physical VIN, ownership documentation and vehicle condition. Use the car buyer checklist before committing to the purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Can I decode any VIN?
The decoder is intended for standard 17-character VINs, commonly used on vehicles manufactured for the 1981 model year and later. Older vehicles and certain vehicle types may use different identifiers or provide limited decoding results. If a VIN is rejected, confirm it carefully against the vehicle.
How accurate is the data from a VIN decoder?
Decoded information reflects the characters entered and the available manufacturer decoding data. Results can be limited by manufacturer, model year, VIN accuracy and available specifications. A valid-looking VIN is not proof that the number belongs to the physical vehicle being inspected.
Can a VIN decoder help me verify a vehicle’s mileage?
A VIN itself does not contain the vehicle’s current odometer reading. A separate mileage check or vehicle history report may provide historical odometer entries, where reported. Compare those entries with the dashboard reading and other evidence.
Is it possible to check the vehicle’s previous owners using a VIN decoder?
Basic VIN decoding does not reveal the names or identities of previous owners. Some vehicle history products or provincial records may provide certain registration or ownership-related information, depending on the jurisdiction and disclosure rules.
Why does my VIN decoder show incomplete or limited data?
The VIN may have been entered incorrectly, the vehicle may use an older or unusual identifier, or detailed specifications may not be available for that model. Check all 17 characters and compare the result with the vehicle. If the issue continues, contact VinAudit Canada.
