Vehicle History Report Providers in Canada: Compare Your Options
Vehicle history reports bring together available records associated with a vehicle identification number (VIN). Canadian buyers can choose from several services, but they differ in their Canadian data sources, report contents and lien-search options.
This comparison covers four commercial providers: CARFAX Canada, VinAudit Canada, ClearVin and AutoCheck by Experian. It explains what their published documentation establishes, followed by useful Canadian government and provincial record searches.
Four Vehicle History Providers to Know
CARFAX Canada and VinAudit Canada focus on Canadian reports. ClearVin provides a dedicated Canadian product, while AutoCheck includes Canadian-source data in a more U.S.-oriented service. This selection is based on documented relevance, not measured market share.

CARFAX Canada
CARFAX Canada is an established Canadian vehicle-history provider. Its published data sources include Canadian and U.S. vehicle authorities, insurance organizations, collision-repair facilities, auctions and police departments. Available reports can show recorded damage, registration and branding, odometer readings, theft, recalls and U.S. history.
CARFAX Canada offers two distinct consumer products: the standard Vehicle History Report, which excludes a lien search, and Vehicle History Report + Lien Check. The latter searches lien registries in Canadian jurisdictions where the vehicle is currently or formerly registered, except the Northwest Territories. An additional ICBC check may be offered for vehicles with B.C. history.

VinAudit Canada
VinAudit Canada documents vehicle-registration information from 12 Canadian provinces and territories, excluding the Northwest Territories. Other report categories include vehicle status and branding, recorded odometer readings, theft information, manufacturer buybacks, salvage listings and matching U.S. records where available. Vehicle-status coverage is documented for 10 jurisdictions.
VinAudit also offers a separate lien-search API with documented coverage for all 13 Canadian provinces and territories. That capability should not be confused with an automatic nationwide lien search in every standard consumer history report.

ClearVin
ClearVin markets a Canada-specific vehicle-history product using information from Canadian motor-vehicle registries, insurance databases and auction sources. Its advertised report categories include vehicle specifications, accident and damage information, mileage, registration and title records, sales history and theft records when available.
ClearVin publishes province-specific VIN-check pages for Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec. These pages do not establish a complete coverage limit or demonstrate identical coverage in every province. Although ClearVin mentions lien information, a comprehensive Canada-wide provincial lien-search scope is not documented on its Canadian product page.

AutoCheck by Experian
AutoCheck is Experian’s vehicle-history reporting service. Its official FAQ identifies Canadian motor-vehicle departments among its information sources and says the service reports on vehicles manufactured for the Canadian and U.S. markets. Reports can include accident, odometer, registration and auction information from participating sources.
Its consumer product remains more U.S.-oriented than the Canada-first services above. The public documentation reviewed does not establish complete province-by-province Canadian coverage or a nationwide Canadian provincial lien-search product.

Canadian record coverage and lien-search products are major differences. The comparison below identifies what each provider has actually documented, rather than leaving you to research basic product details yourself.
| Provider | Documented Canadian coverage | Canadian lien-search position |
|---|---|---|
| CARFAX Canada | Canada-first; Canadian and U.S. registration, reported damage, branding, odometer, theft and other participating sources. | Standard history report: not included. Report + Lien Check: searches Canadian jurisdictions with current or past registrations, excluding the Northwest Territories. |
| VinAudit Canada | Registration data sources in 12 jurisdictions (excluding Northwest Territories); status/brand information documented for 10, plus available theft and U.S. history. | Separate lien-search API documents coverage of all 13 provinces and territories. A nationwide lien search is not stated as a standard inclusion in every consumer history report. |
| ClearVin | Dedicated Canada VIN reports using Canadian registry, insurance and auction sources; registration/title, damage, mileage, sales and theft data advertised. | References title liens, but the Canada product documentation reviewed does not establish a comprehensive Canada-wide government lien-registry search. |
| AutoCheck | Experian confirms Canadian motor-vehicle authorities as sources and support for Canadian-market vehicles; primarily U.S.-oriented. | No nationwide Canadian provincial lien-search product or full provincial coverage matrix established in its public consumer materials. |
Report contents depend on the VIN and what participating sources have recorded. A provider’s geographic coverage does not mean every vehicle has entries in every category. Product offerings and prices may change.

Two providers specifically named by the province
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador lists CARFAX Canada and VinAudit Canada as approved entities for vehicle history reports under its motor-dealer requirements. The listing applies to that province; it is not a federal endorsement or a nationwide ranking.
Canadian Government and Public-Record Resources
These services answer specific questions and are not equivalent to commercial multi-source history reports. Use the relevant provincial record when you need to verify registration status or a lien.

What a Vehicle History Report Can—and Cannot—Tell You
The four providers collect available records from different contributing sources. Once you have a report, use its findings to guide checks that cannot be replaced by a report alone.
Match the VIN and registration jurisdictions
Compare the VIN on the report with the vehicle and registration documents. A vehicle registered in more than one province, or imported from the U.S., may have history across jurisdictions.
Review recorded status, damage and odometer changes
Look for salvage or rebuilt designations, reported damage events and inconsistent odometer entries. Not every incident or reading is reported to a provider.
Use a proper lien search for financial interests
A vehicle-history report does not necessarily include a Canadian lien-registry search. Check whether a separate lien search was performed and obtain appropriate written evidence of any lien release before purchasing.
Check theft, recalls and the physical condition
Supplement the report with Canadian police stolen-vehicle records, current manufacturer recall information and an independent mechanical inspection.
Remember: “No records found” means no matching record was returned from the sources searched. It is not a guarantee that a vehicle has never been damaged or has no hidden problems.
Questions About Vehicle History Report Providers
Which vehicle history report providers serve Canadian buyers?
CARFAX Canada and VinAudit Canada are Canada-focused providers. ClearVin offers a dedicated Canadian vehicle-history product. AutoCheck by Experian also incorporates Canadian motor-vehicle records but has a stronger U.S. consumer-market orientation. They are not ranked here by independently verified market share.
Does Newfoundland and Labrador approve VinAudit Canada?
Yes. Newfoundland and Labrador’s government lists CARFAX Canada and VinAudit Canada as approved entities for vehicle history reports under its motor-dealer guidance. That recognition does not establish a federal endorsement or approval for other provinces.
Does a CARFAX Canada report include lien information?
The standard CARFAX Canada Vehicle History Report does not include a lien check. Its Vehicle History Report + Lien Check adds searches in the Canadian provinces and territories where the vehicle is currently or historically registered, excluding the Northwest Territories.
Does every VinAudit Canada report include a nationwide lien search?
No nationwide lien search is identified as an automatic inclusion in every standard VinAudit Canada consumer report. VinAudit separately documents a lien-search API covering all 13 Canadian provinces and territories.
Does ClearVin have Canadian vehicle history records?
Yes. ClearVin advertises a Canada-specific VIN report based on Canadian motor-vehicle registries, insurance databases and auction records, with registration, title, sales, damage, mileage and theft information when reported. Its public Canadian product page does not establish identical coverage in every province.
Can AutoCheck retrieve Canadian vehicle records?
Yes. Experian’s AutoCheck FAQ explicitly identifies Canadian motor-vehicle departments among its data sources and says reports support vehicles manufactured for the Canadian and U.S. markets. Its public consumer documentation does not define complete province-by-province Canadian coverage or a nationwide Canadian lien check.
Is CARPROOF a separate vehicle history provider?
No. CARPROOF adopted the CARFAX Canada name in 2018; it is not a distinct current provider.
Is a VIN decoder or a clean history report proof that a used car has no problems?
No. VIN decoding provides manufacturer-coded details, while a history report compiles records from participating sources. Neither can rule out unreported damage or replace a thorough vehicle inspection.
