Understand What’s in a Vehicle History Report
A VIN can tell you more than a vehicle’s make and model. VinAudit organizes available registration, status, recall, theft, salvage and other records into sections you can review before buying, selling or appraising a vehicle.
Explore the nine report sections below to understand what each record means, what deserves a closer look, and when to follow up with an official source.
Four things worth checking first
Make sure the VIN on the vehicle matches the registration documents and the vehicle shown in the report.
Look for changes of jurisdiction and odometer readings that seem inconsistent with the vehicle’s age or documentation.
Investigate any branding, stolen-vehicle record or salvage-auction listing before committing to a purchase.
Confirm VIN-specific recall status with the manufacturer and examine matching U.S. records when applicable.
Start with the vehicle’s identity
Verify the identifying details first. An inconsistency in the VIN, body style or equipment can affect how you interpret everything else.
01Vehicle SpecificationsVIN-decoded attributes, including model year, make, model, trim, body style, engine and available vehicle dimensions or fuel-economy estimates.
Why it matters: Compare the report’s make, model, engine and body style with the vehicle and seller’s documents.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| VIN | Vehicle identification number | VIN ending in 1213 (masked) |
| Year | Vehicle model year | 2005 |
| Make | Manufacturer or brand | Toyota |
| Model | Vehicle model | Corolla |
| Trim | Version or trim level | CE |
| Engine | Engine displacement and configuration | 1.8L L4 DOHC 16V |
| Style | Body style | 4-door sedan |
| Made In | Country of manufacture | United States |
| Steering Type | Steering system | Rack and pinion |
| Anti-lock Braking System | Anti-lock braking system, when specified | 4-wheel ABS |
| Fuel Capacity | Fuel-tank capacity | 50.0 L |
| Overall Height | Vehicle height | 1.49 m |
| Overall Length | Vehicle length | 4.53 m |
| Overall Width | Vehicle width | 1.70 m |
| Standard Seating | Standard number of seats | 5 |
| Optional Seating | Optional seating information | Not available |
| Highway Fuel Consumption | Estimated highway fuel consumption | 6.2 L/100 km |
| City Fuel Consumption | Estimated city fuel consumption | 7.8 L/100 km |
What to know: A mismatch does not always prove fraud; verify the VIN, trim and build information before proceeding.
Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
Understand its reported history
These records can reveal changes in registration, recorded vehicle status, recalls, buybacks, theft reports and salvage-auction activity. No single category tells the whole story.
02Registration RecordsRegistration entries supplied by participating Canadian vehicle authorities, including dates, jurisdictions and recorded odometer values where available.
Why it matters: Look for changes of province or territory and compare recorded mileage over time.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Registration Date | Date the registration was recorded | 2019-01-15 |
| Jurisdiction | Province or territory issuing the record | Manitoba |
| Type | Registration-record type or status | Current |
| Odometer | Recorded distance at registration | 84,197 km |
| VIN | VIN associated with the record | VIN ending in 1213 (masked) |
What to know: Registration is not the same as a complete list of owners; an absent entry does not prove the vehicle was never registered elsewhere.
Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
03Vehicle Status & BrandsReported classifications such as normal, salvage, rebuilt, irreparable or inspection required. Terms and recording practices can vary by jurisdiction.
Why it matters: Investigate any branded status and understand the implications in the province where you plan to register the vehicle.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Jurisdiction | Authority issuing the status | Manitoba |
| Status / Brand | Recorded status or vehicle brand | Normal |
| Status Date | Date the status was recorded | 2019-01-14 |
| Detail | Additional explanation, when supplied | Normal status reported at record date |
What to know: A “normal” record at one point in time does not guarantee the vehicle has never been damaged or branded elsewhere.
Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
04Recall RecordsPotential recall notices associated with the vehicle’s year, make and model, including the issue and manufacturer reference where reported.
Why it matters: Identify possible safety issues and ask whether any applicable recall repair has been completed.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Recall Date | Date of the recall notice | 2020-03-04 |
| Recall Number | Manufacturer recall reference | SRC RA2 |
| Recall Details | System or issue described in the recall | Suspension system |
What to know: Model-level recall listings do not confirm that a specific VIN is affected or whether a repair is outstanding. Verify with the manufacturer using the VIN.
Confirm applicable recalls with the vehicle manufacturer ↗Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
05Manufacturer BuybacksAvailable manufacturer buyback information associated with the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP), including manufacturer, model and complaint details.
Why it matters: A buyback record deserves closer inspection of the complaint, resolution and available supporting documents.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Manufacturer named in the record | FCA Canada |
| Model | Vehicle model identified | RAM 3500 Longhorn |
| Complaint | Complaint category or description | Steering / suspension |
What to know: A CAMVAP complaint is not automatically a vehicle buyback. This section describes buyback-related records when available.
Learn about the CAMVAP program ↗Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
06Theft RecordsAvailable reports of theft or recovery from participating sources, including the reporting jurisdiction and last recorded update.
Why it matters: Treat a theft-related record as a reason to verify the vehicle’s identity and current status before payment.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle Type | Type or body style of the vehicle | Sedan |
| Make | Manufacturer | Toyota |
| Model | Vehicle model | Corolla |
| Year | Model year | 2005 |
| Stolen In | Jurisdiction associated with the theft report | Ontario |
| Record Last Updated | Last update to the record | 2014-05-07 |
What to know: A historical theft report may have been resolved. Verify present status with the appropriate authority; no listed match is not a theft clearance certificate.
Check the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) ↗Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
07Salvage Auction RecordsReported historical auction listings, potentially including date, location, described damage, odometer reading and other listing details.
Why it matters: An auction listing can help you spot a prior incident or condition that calls for inspection.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Date of the auction record | 2020-04-06 |
| Location | Location of the sale, if available | Not specified |
| Details | Listing or reported condition | Primary damage: mechanical |
| Odometer | Reported reading, including unit | 144,844 miles, exempt |
| Exterior Color | Reported colour | Black |
What to know: A salvage-auction listing by itself does not establish the vehicle’s current legal status or prove every reported problem remains unresolved.
Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
Check cross-border history and next steps
Look beyond Canadian records when a vehicle may have a U.S. history, and use supplemental resources to continue your research.
08U.S. Vehicle HistoryMatching U.S. title, junk, salvage, insurance, theft, sales-listing and title-check records when available.
Why it matters: Especially useful if the vehicle was previously sold, registered or otherwise recorded in the United States.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Title Records | U.S. state title or ownership records | View matching records |
| Junk / Salvage / Insurance | Reported total-loss or salvage-related records | View matching records |
| Theft Records | Available U.S. theft and recovery reports | No records found |
| Sales Records | Available historical sale listings | No records found |
| Title Checks | U.S. title-brand checks | 1 record found |
What to know: Review the underlying U.S. record when offered; “no records found” describes available matches, not a guaranteed clean history.
Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
09Supplemental ResourcesAdditional references and research recommendations that may include market-value estimates, ownership-cost estimates or links to external checks.
Why it matters: These resources help plan further research after reviewing available vehicle-history records.
| Field | What it means | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation | Suggested additional research | Check for lien |
| Requires | Information needed for the additional check | VIN |
| Source | External resource associated with the recommendation | Varies by recommendation |
What to know: Estimates are not historical events or independently verified sale prices. A recommended lien search is separate from proof that a vehicle is lien-free.
Example field values are independent illustrations, not a single vehicle report. Availability and wording vary by VIN and reporting source.
How to read a vehicle history report
A report is most useful when you compare it with the vehicle in front of you and the documents supplied by the seller.
Confirm the vehicle
Compare the VIN, year, make and model with the vehicle, registration papers and seller’s listing.
Read records in order
Compare dates, provinces, status changes and odometer entries. Investigate gaps or inconsistent readings.
Follow up where needed
Confirm recall status by VIN, request supporting documents, check applicable liens and arrange an independent inspection.
What do common result messages mean?
One or more matching entries were returned. Read the detail and determine whether further checks are needed.
No matching entry was returned from the available source for that category. This is not proof that an event never happened.
The requested field or record was not supplied. Coverage and availability can vary by source and jurisdiction.
Frequently asked questions
Will all nine sections appear with records for every vehicle?
No. The layout describes report categories; the specific information returned depends on the VIN and records available from participating sources. Some sections may have no matching entries.
Is a “normal” vehicle status the same as a damage-free history?
No. A status record reflects a recorded classification in a particular jurisdiction at a particular time. Damage, repairs or incidents may exist without a reported brand.
Does VinAudit show every accident or incident?
No. VinAudit organizes available registration, status, recall, theft, buyback, salvage-auction, and other reported records. Not all accidents or incidents appear in every data source, so a complete incident history should not be assumed.
Will the recall section tell me if a repair is still needed?
Recall information can identify potential issues associated with the vehicle model. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer with the VIN to determine whether a recall applies and whether the remedy has been completed.
Why are U.S. vehicle-history records included in a Canadian report?
A vehicle in Canada may have been imported from or previously recorded in the United States. Matching U.S. records, when available, can reveal additional history worth investigating.
What if no theft or salvage records are found?
That means the available search returned no matching entries for that category. It does not guarantee the vehicle has never been stolen, damaged or sold at auction.
Are the market-value and ownership-cost figures historical facts?
No. These are supplemental estimates based on available inputs and methodology. They are different from official registration or status records.
Do I still need a lien search and inspection?
Yes, when appropriate. A report complements but does not replace an applicable provincial lien search, a qualified pre-purchase inspection, or other checks needed for your transaction.
