Vehicle History Report Providers in Canada
Buying a used vehicle? A vehicle history report can help you research its past using records associated with its vehicle identification number (VIN). Knowing where to find that information, and what it may leave out, is an important part of making an informed decision.
Below, you’ll find commercial vehicle history report providers serving Canadians, followed by official Canadian resources for checking specific details such as vehicle registration, theft reports, recalls and liens.
Vehicle History Report Providers
Commercial providers combine available information from participating sources into a VIN-based report. Report contents, coverage and optional searches can differ by service and by vehicle.
VinAudit Canada
VinAudit Canada provides vehicle history reports for Canadian vehicle buyers, sellers and dealerships. Its published data sources include provincial and territorial registration agencies, government organizations and industry partners.
Depending on the vehicle and available records, a report may include vehicle specifications, registration history, vehicle status and brands, theft information, manufacturer buybacks, salvage auction listings and matching U.S. history.

CARFAX Canada
CARFAX Canada provides vehicle history information to Canadian consumers and automotive businesses. Its reports draw on available sources for information such as reported accident or damage history, registration, odometer readings, service activity, theft records and U.S. history.
CARFAX Canada offers different report products, including options with a Canadian lien search. Review the chosen product’s inclusions before ordering.

For eligible used vehicles in Ontario, a UVIP provides Ontario registration history, vehicle details, lien information and other provincial information. It is not a complete nationwide history report.

Search by VIN to see whether a vehicle has been reported stolen to police. If a search indicates a possible stolen vehicle, contact local police for confirmation and assistance.

A registered lien can affect a purchase. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada provides links to provincial and territorial searches. Fees and procedures vary, and a vehicle may have liens registered in more than one jurisdiction.

How to Make the Most of a Vehicle History Report
A report is one part of a thorough vehicle check. Use it to identify questions worth investigating, then confirm important details through records and an independent inspection.
Match the VIN to the vehicle
Check that the VIN on the report agrees with the VIN on the vehicle and its paperwork. Inspect the VIN plate for signs of alteration.
Review reported events and gaps
Look for registration changes, odometer inconsistencies, status or branding records, and other listed events. Ask for supporting documents when something needs explanation.
Verify specific questions at the source
Use appropriate government records for stolen vehicle searches, recalls, liens and provincial registration details when relevant to your purchase.
Arrange an independent inspection
Have a qualified mechanic inspect the vehicle’s condition. A history report cannot confirm every repair, hidden defect or unreported incident.
Remember: “No records found” means no matching records were returned from the sources checked. It does not establish that the vehicle has never been damaged, stolen, repaired or subject to an unreported event.
Questions About Vehicle History Reports
Who provides vehicle history reports in Canada?
Commercial providers include VinAudit Canada and CARFAX Canada. Provincial agencies and other public services also offer specific vehicle information, but those services are not always full vehicle history reports.
Is CARPROOF still a separate provider?
No. CARPROOF was renamed CARFAX Canada in 2018. You may still encounter the earlier name on older listings and reports.
Can I check a vehicle’s history for free?
Some public searches, including the CPIC stolen-vehicle search and Transport Canada’s recall information, are free to access. Comprehensive commercial reports and certain government registry searches may have fees.
Is a provincial vehicle record the same as a vehicle history report?
No. A provincial document generally focuses on records held within that jurisdiction. A commercial report compiles available records from multiple participating sources, but it may still have gaps.
Does a vehicle history report confirm that a car has no liens?
Not necessarily. Check whether a lien search is included in the particular report product and, when needed, verify the vehicle through the appropriate provincial or territorial lien registries.
Does “no accidents reported” mean a vehicle has never been damaged?
No. Some damage and repairs are not reported to the sources used by a provider. An independent inspection remains important.
